Grammar

I almost forgot, I'd like everyone who does not have an English Grammar book at home to buy one. It's really important for you. Our class Grammar book sonly has a small part of what you need to know. There's nothing in it about articles, prepositions etc...

also, check out: owl.english.purdue.edu

Drivin'

Please find some time to read "HOLES" this weekend. It's a good idea to "skim" it after you read and take notes from it. Think of questions to ask others and questions to ask the class on Monday. I am expecting a much better discussion tomorrow than last Monday's discussion.
Russ' Weekend Story:
Anyway, this weekend I was driving whe I got a flat tire. I hadn't gotten a flat tired in a very long time - maybe 12 or 13 years ago. So, of course, I had to change it. Luckily, I have a garage, so it wasn't raining on me when I changed it. At first, I had truly forgotten how to change a flat, but soon, it all came back to me. I put on the spare then went to a tire store, and they fixed my "flat" tire and put it on the car. They put my spare tire in the trunk. They did this all for free. I was surprised. What wonderful customer service. It took a while, though. While we were waiting, we went to A&W, which is one of our favorite 'burger joints, next to Dick's.
Please read this, and we'll discuss it. The next time, I will pick 2 students to post a short story on the blog.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Articles and more Articles. Was it painful. Some of you looked like you were in so much pain. Sorry. I know it was a lot.Homework: Grammar Book pp. 56-57, and then write a (short) story (2-3 sentences are OK) about a mistake you've made. Talk about a time when you gave someone your phone number, and that person stalked you. "I shouldn't have given my phone number." or "I should've given him a fake number."Midterms will be on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.I'll give you more detail on it tomorrow! Please study that vocabulary and use it. We have a paper due tomorrow, don't we?Do you need more time on it? Would you like more time with it? Please let me know by leaving a comment on the blog or emailing me.GoodnightRuss

Tainted Textbooks

It has come to my attention that several students have books that have answers written in them. This is against school rules and is "Plagiarism". If you have a book with answers written in it or if you have the TEACHERS' VERSION of a textbook, please buy a new book and return the teachers verson ASAP.
Thank you.

Tuesday

Hopefully, the last exercise we did today at the board will help you to think about what you read just a little more. It's not only about reading, but also understanding. You must also develop questions as well as be able to answer them. I am still seeing too many students sitting around with blank looks on their faces when they should be discussing the facts of the reading and offering answers.

OK, see you tomorrow.

Monday

I think that Thursday is too long just to write a paragraph. Let's make it due on Wednesday. Type it again. If you need help...ask.

Tomorrow is quiz day.

What else is there?......I think that's it.

Thursday

Students!!!

I think this class is going really well. Am I right? I see that everyone is starting to loosen up and relax more. This is good!
OK, so you know that knowing how to use a word i a sentence is as important as knowing what it means, right. It's important to be able to recognize which family each word is in: a verb, an adjective, a noun, an adverb etc...
Tomorrow, the test will be based on reading. Practice your skimming & scanning techniques. Also work on trying to understand words from their context, which means, read the sentence that the word is in and look at "clues" in the sentence. For Example:
"Bob is so clumsy sometimes; for example, yesterday he spilled his water on the table twice, and he almost fell down the stairs."
- What does the word "clumsy" mean. What other word(s) in the sentence(s) help you to understand its meaning?

We will also continue with preposition review tomorrow time permitting.

Goodnight

Wednesday

Here's your assignment:

There was a Tornado that hit Seattle early this morning at approximately 2:45am. It uprooted trees and blew the roofs off several homes in the Rainier Beach neighborhood. It also lifted up half a dozen cattle and carried them 2 miles away where people found them virtually unharmed. Seattle Mayor Greg Nicoles called for a state of emergency. Ambulances have brought 2 dozen people to area hospitals and doctors are helping them out.

Please change the necessary sentences in active voice to passive voice.

Other homework, write a 2-paragraph paper about your article. One paragraph is a summary and the second paragraph is your opinion.

Also, make sure you've finished answering the questions related to the reading on Fashion in your Reading books.

Any questions??? Email me or come and see me in my office.
